FREEMAN FABRICATION

We dropped by Freeman fabrication to catch up with founder and owner Josh Freeman and chat about his new shop, relocating to Texas, and how he started off in the Metal Fab business.

In his own words, “I like the shape of things. I know that’s weird to say ‘I like shapes’ but I like things that have a nice flow to them. Nice lines.” Josh enjoys making something from nothing, “It starts off as just a big piece of sheet metal and you can make it into anything.”

“I WAS ALWAYS DRAWING MY DAD’S RACE CAR –
I DESIGNED THE PAINT JOBS FOR HIS RACE CAR SO I WAS INTO THE ART SIDE OF THINGS FOR SURE.”

“I BUILT A BMX BIKE WHEN I WAS A KID –
I MEAN IT WAS 3/8” SCRAP PIPE AND SOME 2X4S SO IT WAS LIKE 50 LBS BUT I LOVED IT.”

Josh moved from Wisconsin to California and began working as a body man, working on collision repair but kept his passion for custom metalwork alive by working on side projects. Working in a smaller shop he was able to keep his projects on-site and at 5 PM he would clock out and start working on his custom builds.

While he was in California, Josh built what he has dubbed his calling card, Hammerhead.

“Hammerhead started it all for Freeman Fabrication. The head is nice and wide and resembles a Hammerhead shark, thus the name.” Hammerhead is painted blue-gray with blue highlights and Autism Awareness sticker on the back glass and has been featured on the cover of Street Trucks magazine as well as appearing at SEMA.

“We built this for my son, that’s why this blue color is what it is, we want to light it up blue wherever we go and show that we support all things autism.”

After building Hammerhead Josh moved to Texas and spent time working at both Arclight Fabrication and Gas Monkey Garage for several years before deciding to go solo and opening his own shop in Denton, Texas.

Josh’s killer metal fab skills have opened the door for Freeman Fabrications to take off. “I realized that where I wanted to be was in my own spot. So I figured I’m going to bank on myself and start up Freeman Fabrication, and we’re ready to start killing it here at Freeman Fabrications.”

“If you don’t do the metalwork properly – you can do all the body work you want, all the paint work you want and then in a couple years it looks like garbage, because the metal fails from underneath.”
